Innovations in Yearlong Residencies: Lessons from Leading Educator Preparation Programs

Participants will have the opportunity to learn from leading institutions in educator preparation. Representatives from Texas Tech University, University of Texas El Paso, Tarleton State, University of Houston, and the University of Texas at San Antonio will share their experiences and insights into piloting and scaling yearlong residencies for their candidates. The educator preparation leaders will delve into the data, providing valuable insights into resident retention rates, the impact on student achievement, and observation ratings.

Strategic Staffing for Paid Teacher Residencies

9:15 a.m. - 9:45 a.m.

Educator preparation programs (EPPs) across Texas have worked closely with their school district partners to design strategies to engage in strategic staffing. Strategic Staffing reallocates underutilized district funds to provide sustainable resident stipends. In turn, residents fulfill immediate instructional needs in schools as a part of their year long student teaching experience.

Strategic Staffing: Collaborative Partnerships

This session will provide an in-depth look at the Strategic Staffing design process, a collaborative effort between EPPs and District partners. Learn from the successful partnership between Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi ISD, and US PREP as they share their journey in designing and implementing a sustainable, paid year long residency. Discover how this model benefits all stakeholders involved and the key strategies for its successful implementation.

This session will facilitate a candid discussion with current residents who are fulfilling strategic staffing roles as they share their experiences and insights. Discover how high-quality, yearlong residencies can positively impact the growth and development of teacher candidates. Gain valuable perspectives on overcoming barriers to accessing such pathways, and learn firsthand about the additional instructional responsibilities these residents take on to meet district needs.

This session will provide a comprehensive discussion on the role of Technical Assistance (TA) providers in supporting Strategic Staffing partnerships in Texas. Hear firsthand from TA providers as they share insights from their experiences supporting a variety of EPP and district partners. Learn how technical assistance supports the successful design and implementation of paid residencies through Strategic Staffing.

Texas Education Agency: Supporting Strategic Staffing through Policy
8:30 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. | Salon E-F, 3rd Floor

The Texas Education Agency provides support for Strategic Staffing with a multi-pronged approach, including educator preparation rules, continuous improvement standards for educator preparation programs (EPPs), and grant and technical assistance opportunities for LEAs. In this session, representatives from the Division of Educator Quality will share what policy work has been done so far and what is forthcoming for Strategic Staffing in Texas.
