About SPS
The Student Perception Survey assignment is an action research project that guides teacher candidates through the collection and analysis of a K-12 student perception survey. This project focuses on the need to provide students a voice in their education. Moreover, the collection and analysis of student survey responses will be followed by targeted interventions that are planned and executed by the teacher candidate. Whole group and focus group interventions will allow the teacher candidate to address the needs of the K-12 students.

This collection of resources provides an overview of the student perception survey and the assignment that has been created to help teacher candidates analyze and reflect on their students’ responses. These materials can be used to orient teacher candidates to the SPS assignment and its purpose.

This section provides a series of presentations that can be used with teacher candidates to prepare them for all aspects of the SPS assignment. The presentations include links to resources and materials that will help the teacher candidates successfully implement the pre- and post- student perception surveys. They will also be provided with support in collecting, analyzing and responding to the survey data.
Introduction to SPS Assignment
This is the first in a series of four presentations that can be used to prepare teacher candidates for the SPS assignment. In this presentation, the teacher candidates will be given background on the purpose of the student perception survey and will be provied an overview of the SPS assignment packet.
Preparing TCs to Administer and Respond Professionally to SPS Data
This is the second in a series of four presentations that prepare teacher candidates to complete the SPS assignment. This presentation gives teacher candidates an overview of how to administer the SPS survey. It also prepares the teacher candidates to respond professionally to the students’ survey responses.
Pre- and Post- Data Analysis & Final Presentation
This is the final presentation in a series of four that prepares teacher candidates to complete the SPS assignment. This presentation provides an overview of how to analyze the pre- and post- SPS data.

K-2 SPS Administration
This section includes all of the materials needed to administer the K-2 student perception survey.
K-2 SPS Introduction Presentation
This presentation can be used by the teacher candidate to administer the K-2 student perception survey. It provides an introduction for the students and walks them through how to complete the survey.
K-2 Answer Document
This document is used to administer the K-2 student perception survey. The teacher candidate or other adult will read the prompts on the survey and the students will circle their responses.
K-2 Data Recording Chart
This document provides a chart that is used to record the K-2 SPS responses. The teacher candidate should use this chart to organize the pre- and post- survey responses and track any changes.
K-2 Bilingual Administration
This document can be used for biligual administration of the K-2 student perception survey. There are instructions provdied in both English and Spanish.
K-2 Survey Statements Clustered by Contruct
This resource organizes the K-2 SPS prompts into four constructs. This can be used by teacher candidates to complete the analysis tasks in the SPS assignment packet.
K-5 Strategy Guide
This resource provides Teacher Candidates with instructional strategies to support effective response to K-12 students’ feedback received from the SPS survey results. The strategies are aligned directly to the SPS constructs.
Optional Letter to Parents
This letter can be sent home to parents to provide additional information about the student perception survey. This is an optional letter and does not need to be sent home unless the university, mentor or partner school district would like to inform parents of the survey. Consult with your Site Coordinator and school principal prior to sending any parent communication.
3-5 SPS Administration
This section includes all of the materials needed to administer the 3-5 student perception survey.
3-5 SPS Introduction Presentation
This presentation can be utilized by teacher candidates as they prepare their 3-5th grade students to take the SPS. It is developmentally appropriate for use with this age group and includes information about the purpose of the survey, a sample survey statement and directions for completing. Additionally, the presentation includes opportunities for teacher candidates to encourage students to be reflective and honest.
