An Explicit Focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Antiracism

High-quality teacher preparation can play a critical role in dismantling inequities in education, such as disparities in student achievement and access to high-quality education, which often exist and persist along racial and ethnic lines. Black and Latino/a/x students and students experiencing poverty – like Indigenous, Asian and other students of color – are more likely than white students and students of higher income to be taught by a new teacher, and are also more likely to experience less effective teachers. However, it does not have to be this way – new teachers can be better prepared to have an immediate positive impact on student achievement.

US PREP is proud to partner with teacher preparation leaders across the country to support the way teachers are prepared and has an explicit focus on engaging more deeply in diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism. To support educator preparation programs, US PREP leaders worked alongside other educational leaders to develop a resource to support educator preparation programs: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Companion Document.

The DEI Companion Document is a resource that is meant to supplement the work that organizations are doing to acknowledge and address educational inequities and disparities amongst their student populations. The companion document is organized by objectives to provide:

  • Example actions educator preparation programs can take to further implement high-quality teacher preparation with a deeper focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism;

  • Guiding questions that will aid educator preparation programs in identifying whether and how they are implementing an explicit focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism; and

  • Helpful resources that share promising practices and examples from the field
